CAFKA and Open Sesame are pleased to announce our new collaboration Lèche Vitrine: Open Sesame Project Window, a new space for art installations at Open Sesame, the gallery/shop next to Kitchener City Hall. The name Lèche Vitrine comes from the French term for window-shopping, or literally "window licker." Influenced by the success of Jimmy Limit’s CAFKA.16 project “Photos for Windows,” four new two-dimensional installations—printed on vinyl and placed over part of Open Sesame’s King Street-facing windows—will be commissioned over the coming year.
Vinyl as an artistic medium is ideal for large-format photographs and digital images, and its association with advertising and publicity provides both formal and conceptual connections for artists to consider. Lèche Vitrine supports Open Sesame’s mission in promoting Waterloo Region artists and adding texture, colour, life, and vibrancy to Downtown Kitchener. For CAFKA, this project space is an opportunity to support new art forms and to celebrate emerging artists and experimental work.

Anna van Milligen: ♥ will be the first Lèche Vitrine installation. The opening reception will take place on Friday, September 22, 2017, 7 PM, at Open Sesame, 220 King Street West, Kitchener. Anna van Milligen: ♥ will be on view through December 31, 2017.
Anna van Milligen is a Canadian-American installation artist who is interested in how women construct identities and perform their femininity. Her choice of media includes fake hair, faux fur, and dollar-store beauty enhancements. Van Milligen received her BFA in 2013 from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and her MFA in 2016 from the University of Waterloo. A recipient of the Keith and Win Shantz Fellowship and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, van Milligen recently completed her MFA at the University of Waterloo with an installation called dollhouse — a hyper-feminine fantasy space constructed within the gutted shell of a 1971 Airstream trailer.
Anna van Milligen lives and works in Guelph, Ontario.
Lèche Vitrine is a collaborative project of CAFKA and Open Sesame that has been made possible with the support of the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund.
