In her recent landscape paintings, Melissa Doherty uses Google Earth to reflect our increasing disconnect from nature. While digital technologies and virtual realities provide new perspectives on landscape and a new frontier to get lost in, their limits have—paradoxically—renewed
"Cloud Witness" is about intersections: between the sky and the earth, between the spiritual and the material, between the realm of the mind and the realm of the body, between differing perspectives and identities, between the short-sighted view and the broad perspective.
Melissa Doherty is a midcareer artist with an Honours B.A. (Fine Arts) from the University of Waterloo. She is the recipient of a Laura Ciruls Painting Award from the Ontario Arts Foundation, a Waterloo Region Visual Arts Award, and grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. Solo exhibitions include the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Sherbrooke, Quebec; the University of Toronto; Galerie Art Mûr, Montreal; Wilfrid Laurier University; and most recently, the Art Gallery of Peterborough.
Melissa Doherty gratefully acknowledges the support of the Ontario Arts Council, a government agency.
